Solar Powered Direct to Home based television for the remote and interior areas

Television the powerful media of communication
Television is the most powerful media of communication, education and entertainment. The penetration of television in urban areas is nearly 100%.
In India there are nearly 100 television channels available to the urban community and around 10 available to the rural community. Though their main theme / content is entertainment and communication, they provide sufficient information on governance, agriculture practice, livelihood options, health services, and several others which are useful to citizens.
Government owned Doordarshan has local language channels in every state and also several satellite based channels dedicated to news, parliament, sports and education. Doordarshan transmission is available through the regional transmitters located every 40 to 50 Kms.
Private television channels are totally based on satellite transmission. Urban areas have many cable operators who receive various channels through large dish antennas, receiver sets and then supply this through a cable to the households. The cable operators supply as many channels and charge monthly fee from the households.
Remote Communities do not get TV
However the community living in remote and interior areas have a great disadvantage and are deprived from cable TV.
- Most of the villages in remote areas do not have reliable power supply to run the television and or no power supply at all.
- The transmission of the government channels through the local transmitter is not available since the villages are far off and located in hilly areas.
The rural community is being deprived and cut of from the mainstream life and activities.
They do not get access to weather, agriculture, livelihood, projects, education, health and hygiene information that is now being made available through several channels.
Possible now to empower remote areas
Now with the advent of modern technology, this issue can be addressed and television (all most all the channels) can be provided in any remote and interior area with reasonable cost.
- Solar power is used to run the TV.
- Direct to home (DTH) service is used to receive the television channels.
Using this modern technology and making some more services available on this system it is proposed to run sustainable communication and knowledge centers in the remote and interior areas.
- One set of community television is provided in the community halls/schools in the remote villages.
- The power supply is provided through solar panels and charged to the maintenance free batteries. At least 2 to 3 days back up is provided so that the system works even on cloudy days.
- DTH dish and services are used to get the television.
- One youth in each village is developed as the coordinator and he will take care of the maintenance of the system and its smooth running.
- Since the solar power is available, lighting can also be provided to the same room/hall and children are encouraged to read and study in the evenings.
